Alarming New Study: Millions of Microplastics Found in Bottled Water!

Recent groundbreaking research from Columbia University has revealed alarming findings about the plastic bottles we drink from daily. A typical one-litre plastic bottle contains a staggering 240,000 nanoplastic fragments, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

This innovative research, utilizing advanced laser technology, uncovered even smaller fragments, increasing the count of microplastics in bottled water by a factor of 10, reaching over 100 fragments in some cases. Shockingly, 90% of these particles are classified as nanoplastics, measuring less than 1 micrometre.

Why is this concerning? Nanoplastics, unlike their larger counterparts, have the ability to traverse the digestive and respiratory systems, entering the bloodstream. This poses serious health risks as these minuscule particles can accumulate in vital organs, breach the blood-brain barrier, and even affect unborn infants by crossing the placenta.

Columbia's biophysicist and study co-author Wei Min, the inventor of the new technology, detected an average of 240,000 plastic fragments per litre of bottled water.

What's even more unsettling is that the predominant plastic identified in the analysis of popular bottled water brands is polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the primary plastic used in the bottled beverage industry. The researchers suggest that these minute particles likely leach into the water during bottle compression or through repetitive screwing and unscrewing of the bottle cap.

Ken Foundation advocates for sustainable practices and encourages the use of reusable water bottles to reduce plastic pollution and safeguard your health.
